Jougla Initiale Rouge 2013

favorite unstuffy juicy red

Combing through the vineyards of the Languedoc Roussillon we found a little stunner of a wine from Domaine des Jougla in Saint Chinian that's easy to uncork every day. This cuvee Initiale is the red version of their rosé that's got gobs of big black fruit flavor and it's certified organic. Initiale is that good and it's incredibly reasonable for guilt-free enjoyment.

The Languedoc Roussillon stretches along the rim of the Mediterranean from Arles westward down to Collioure, which is almost to Spain. Hilltops and scrub and pine trees and deep gorges with turquoise cascading water. And the wine - colors of deep garnet with flavors of mint, leather, raspberries, pepper, blackberries and anise. There are a lot of wine-growing areas (AOCs) like Corbieres, Minervois, Faugères, and Saint Chinian.

Domaine des Jougla is located in Prades-sur-Vernazobre, a village of 200 people in the Saint Chinian appellation. Saint Chinian was awarded its own appellation back in the early eighties because of its superior soil (schist, clay, and limestone) and the passion of the winemakers. If you talk to anyone about Domaine des Jougla, they will tell you the wines are a reference point for the area. And they are certified organic.

This wine has been called "deliciously fresh" and it's really that good. It's a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Carignan with the herbal influences of provence and licorice. We love their Initiale rosé so much that when we discovered they have a red version we snagged it with it's incredible everyday drinking price.

The family Jougla has worked their property for many generations and makes their red Initiale from a vineyard that is very close to the Mediterranean Sea right on the dividing line between the schist soils of the mountains and the limestone soil that was raised from the sea when the Pyrenees were forming.

Domaine des Jougla's location means it benefits from two soil types: schist (gives mineral and garrigue notes) and limestone (bouquets of fresh black currants, raspberries, and cherries). The grapes for the Initiale takes advantage of both soil types. The Syrah, Grenache and Carignan grows on the schist, and the Mourvèdre grows only on the clay-limestone soils.

Just thinking about Initiale makes us want some in our glass tonight. Maybe with some roasted peppers and a fat pork chop stuck with herbs and spitting olive oil. We're talking guilt-free enjoyment because you don't have to make any compromises with this incredibly reasonable wine. - Cynthia Hurley French Wines
