Ridiculously Good S. Rhone Red from Rasteau

Ridiculously Good S. Rhone Red from Rasteau

Font de Notre Dame Rasteau 2014
Deep, Intense, Rich Flavor

Jean-Pierre and his cousin, Claude, have managed to WOW us yet again with this cuvee that comes from 80-year-old-vines. Their Rasteau's intense flavors - ripe cherry, blackberry, licorice and spices - build on the long finish. The wine is silky, complex and studded with flavor from it's blend of 75% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre and 10% Cinsault. A knock-out wine that's easy to get ecstatic about.

You love their Gigondas - You won't believe their Rasteau!

Discovering wines is the best part of our job. It took us several years to unearth the La Font de Notre Dame Gigondas. Now, we are excited to bring you their Rasteau.
Jean-Pierre and his cousin, Claude, have managed to WOW us yet again. Their Rasteau's intense flavors - ripe cherry, blackberry, licorice and spices - build on the long finish. The wine is silky, complex and studded with flavor from it's blend of 75% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre and 10% Cinsault.

The infamy of the Southern Rhone lies with the mythic names: Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas and Vacqueyras. While wonderful appellations, they're a bit misleading because these are only 3 of the 8 crus in Southern Rhone. The other 5 crus produce wines of equal power and interest - like Rasteau.

Josh Raynolds from Vinous describes Rasteau: "this appellation's wines tend to the ample muscular side thanks to their Mourvedre and Syrah components. In my experience they are quite well."

The family's vineyard sits high in the hills in Rasteau. To get to it you pass through fields where you can sniff out truffles and enjoy the shade of the Plantain trees planted by Napoleon for his soldiers. The family has 13 hectares of 80 year-old vines in Rasteau. And they are leading the quality standards of this region.
During our visit we discovered Rasteau was established as an appellation for dry red wines only recently - in 2009. One of the things that makes the region so special is that the southern sloping hills form a large natural amphitheater that blocks the Mistral and traps the sunlight. It's the only Cru in the Rhone Valley that contains brown marl, blue marl, and round stones at the root level.

Claude and Jean-Pierre harvest their 80 year-old vines (low yield!) by hand and then allow for a long maceration period to produce the deep dark garnet color that clings deliciously to the sides of the glass. They follow the traditions of the Rhone by aging the wine in concrete. Only a small amount of the wine is aged in barrel to balance the wine before it's blended and then bottled.

Fantastic! The La Font de Notre Dame Rasteau has well-balanced power, seductive roundness and richness. The deep intense flavors explode - that's definitely something to get enthusiastic about.

"Sporting a ruby, semi-opaque color, the 2014 Rasteau from La Font de Notre Dame is a medium-bodied, supple, forward and easy drinking Rhone that gives up ample black cherry, peppery herbs and earth. Drink it anytime over the coming 4-5 years."- Jeb Dunnuck, The Wine Advocate

There's not much else to say. Once again our hat is off, our glass is full, and we raise it to Claude and Jean-Pierre Roux. Salut et felicitations!
