About Our Pasture Raised Animals

Grass feeding benefits the health of the grazing animals, the health of people who eat products from the animals and the health of the environment. Our animals are able to eat nutritious grasses and other plants that their bodies are adapted to digest. We take great care during every step of the process, from birth to market on our family operation. The animals live such stress-free lives that they are rarely sick and do not need to be treated with pharmaceutical drugs.

Our chickens are housed in chicken “tractors” and our turkeys in a “hoop coop.” Both systems are floorless and movable. Once the chicks are able to withstand the temperatures we transport them out of the brooding house to pasture and house them in their movable shelters. The shelters keep predators away and provide shade and protection for the birds. The birds are in a clean environment, have plenty of fresh air, sunlight, and also benefit from the presence of bugs, grubs and minerals from the soil.

Each day the shelters are moved—sometimes twice daily by hand—to new pasture. The birds are checked for water and grain twice a day. Our chickens, dressed and ready for the oven, average 5 pounds but can range from 4 to 7 pounds.

Advantages of Pasture-Raised Meat:

  • Pasture-Raised meat is healthy for you.
  • Pasture-raised meat is higher in omega-3 fatty acids, which helps prevent heart diseases and reduces the risk of brain and nervous disorders. Has also been linked to reductions in obesity, cancer, asthma and depression.
  • Grass-based diets yield meat that is lower in total fat and calories, more concentrated with antioxidants such as vitamins E, C and beta-carotene, and with increased levels of other disease fighting substances.
  • Pasture–raised animals live happier, less stressful lives.
  • Pastured animal products are better for the environment.

Meat Chickens:

Cornish Cross - The standard meat chicken for the American market. The Cornish Cross goes from hatch to processing weight in 6-8 weeks. This breed provides an abundance of white meat, large drumsticks, breast and thighs. Makes great fryers (broilers), and roaster.

Freedom Ranger Chickens - This breeding stock acts like a chicken is supposed to act; picking at grass, searching for bugs, and roaming free! This breed takes longer to finish, doubling the time to 12-14 weeks. Red rangers are a beautiful dark red heritage type of meat chicken bred to actively forage for their own food. They grow more slowly than modern Cornish breeds and their legs are longer and stronger and more naturally in proportion to the breast meat. You will find that their meat has more flavor, and a meatier texture than Cornish Cross. Great bird for slow cooking.
